May is Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, why is it so important?

Mental Health Awareness Month is an important time to help eliminate the stigma that surrounds mental illness. It brings attention to the prevalence and impact of mental health conditions, which have long been stigmatized and misunderstood. By raising awareness, and normalizing the conversation around mental illness, we can educate people and promote understanding, which can ultimately help reduce discrimination and encourage people to reach out for treatment and support.

Stigma around mental health has been a significant barrier to seeking help for those who need it. People with mental health conditions may fear being judged or discriminated against, which can lead to a reluctance to seek treatment or disclose their condition to others. This can make it harder for individuals to receive the care they need and lead to increased social isolation and feelings of shame and guilt.

In the United States, it is estimated that approximately 1 in 5 adults (or 51.5 million people) experience mental illness each year, less than half will seek treatment. The reasons for not seeking help may include fear of discrimination, a lack of awareness or understanding of available resources, or financial barriers.

By raising awareness about mental health conditions, Mental Health Awareness Month can help to reduce the stigma that surrounds them. This can create a more supportive environment for those with mental health conditions, helping them to feel more comfortable seeking help and support. Additionally, raising awareness can help to promote the importance of mental health and the need for improved access to care and resources.

Sam Poulin returns following a mental health leavePittsburgh Penguins forward prospect rejoined the organization, earlier this year, following a three-plus month leave of absence to address his mental health.
Poulin announced his decision to return to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League via a posting on Instagram, stating:
“I strongly encourage everyone to speak openly about mental health because it affects all of us. For those who may be struggling, please know you are not alone.”

Regardless of your age, race, religion, political party or income, mental illness affects all people from many different walks of life. Millions of Americans are affected by mental illness each year. It can impact your relationships with family and friends, cause problems at work, and affect the way you feel about yourself and the others around you.
