As I reflect on the tragic event in Minneapolis and the civil unrest we have seen here in Buffalo and around the country, I find myself at a loss for words. As a behavioral health care organization, we understand that the fear, anger, and grief people are feeling is reflective of the longstanding social injustice and recurring complex trauma — physical, psychological, economic, and social — of marginalized individuals in our community.

The protests signal generations of pain, suffering, anger and fear that many have been living with for far too long. Inequality has existed for many people of color, women, the poor, mentally ill and other groups within our country. None of us should be passive and let hate, discrimination, and violence infect our society.

I feel that this is an important time to reaffirm that BryLin Behavioral Health System stands united against all forms of racial injustice and stigma. As President/CEO, I am committed to ensuring employees are treated fairly, with respect, and be able to share their views.

United Against All Forms of Racial Injustice

For our employees who may be hurting right now, I want you to know that you are not alone and that we have resources to support you, including our Employee Assistance Program. We need to reach out to each other, listen, learn and become engaged. Be mindful that our fellow employees may be hurting and have been hurting. Even if they may seem “fine”, take a moment and reach out to coworkers to let them know you care about what is happening. It is more important now than ever to talk to one another.

It is how we come together, during difficult times, that will reveal the true character of our organization. Positive change starts with more dialogue and the better understanding that comes with it.

Let us support each other to practice kindness, understanding, and come together as a unified team, a community, and a behavioral health care family.

Sincerely,
